Life As We Know It
As I watch my beautiful granddaughter growing up, I think back to when my daughter was young. I wondered if we would ever get her raised, at least in one piece! My daudhter was one who was ALWAYS pushing the envelope. Pushing the boundaries to see how far she could go. No wonder I have gray hair!!
Yet my precious little girl has turned out to be a wonderful young lady, a terrific mom. How did we finally achieve success in child rearing? I have no idea! Oh, there was always the usual advice - don't talk to strangers ( she never got the hang of that one), eat your vegetables, always put on clean underwear, you know, sage advice that has been handed down through the ages.
I think more than anything the best advice my daughter recieved from her mother & I was the life we lived before her. We tried to be very transparent in our home. We were in the ministry most of the time she was growing up. Church was very important in our scheme of things. What she heard preached and taught at church, she saw practiced at home. She saw that her mother & I's love was real and our faith in Christ was genuine.
Were we perfect? No not hardly. Were things always rosy? No they weren't. But in good times and bad; we prayed. In high times and in low; we trusted God. And when folks were nice and not so nice; we loved.
It seems sometimes my daughter turned great, not because of what I did but in spite of it. Bob Carlisle put it best in his song, "Butterfly Kisses", "with all that I've done wrong I must have done something right, to deserve a hug in the morning and butterfly kisses at night."
Yes, I must have done something right cause I STILL get Butterfly Kisses!
